How to Get Rid of Your Phobia

Age Regression and Confrontation

Is your phobia tying you down?

Are you having trouble living a normal life because of your fear?

A friend of mine used to be afraid of crossing bridges. We would sometimes have to drive miles out of the way to avoid a bridge! She knew it was a ridiculous fear. But it was always there, lurking in the back of her mind.

You learned in Part 1 the 5 basic causes of phobias.

Did you figure out what caused your phobia?

My friend Helen’s fear of bridges was transmitted to her from another person, her mother. Once we found that out, we were able to create suggestions that would eliminate the fear and reframe her experiences with posthypnotic suggestions.

Does your fear give you a constant stream of unpleasant memories?

You may be a candidate for age regression therapy.

As I said before, age regression is best performed by a trained hypnotist. However, you can do age regression with self hypnosis.

Age regression takes you back to the time when your phobia began. You need to identify the specific event that caused the fear and cut your strings to it.

You use phrases such as, “remember when, a long time ago, when you were very, very young, or as children…”

For example, you can say, “remember when as a child you moved away from your school and best friend?” This can be the beginning of taking you back to your childhood memories.

Milton Erickson was a master of confusion hypnotherapy. He would create a full age regression by creating a state of confusion and disorientation in his client.

First, he would confuse them about the day of the week, and the about the week and month, and finally confusion about the year. When the patient was completely disoriented, he would then take him back to an earlier age.

Age regression needs to be done with care because if it is the result of an extremely distressing situation, other issues may come out and it may be better left alone.

As you go back in time and memories resurface, it is importance to find out if that memory is the one that caused your fear. If not, you need to keep going back until the event that caused the phobia is evident.

For example, Henry was extremely afraid of snakes. He dreamed about them. It didn’t make it any easier that he lived in the country and there were plenty of opportunities to see REAL snakes.

When he wasn’t dreaming of snakes, he constantly surveyed the grounds, the house and everywhere he stepped to be sure a snake wasn’t going slither out and wrap itself around him.

Henry believed that his fear came from the fact that when he was growing up, his uncle kept a boa constrictor and like to let it wrap itself around him.

As Henry regressed to his childhood, he remembered a time when a friend had a large rubber snake and threw it at him. I asked him if that is what made him afraid. He said no.

Then Henry went back to an earlier age of about 8 years old and remembered his uncle wrapping the boa constrictor around him. I asked him if that was what caused his fear. He said no.

Finally he remembered! His brother was always teasing him when he was very young by telling him that a snake was under his bed and was going to slide out and attack him when he went to sleep!

Once you get rid of the emotional tie to your fear, you can cut it loose by reframing your experience.

You can look at it like a movie. You can watch yourself watching yourself confront the thing you are fearful of and all at once it changes your whole outlook on the fear. You are calmer and feel your response to the phobia change.
